Oxford, Cambridge, Bath or Windsor: Which Day Trip From London Is Worth Your Day?

Oxford, Cambridge, Bath or Windsor? Journey times, 2026 ticket prices and closing days compared, so you pick the right day trip from London by train.

Take Windsor for the shortest ride, Oxford for the most free sightseeing, Cambridge for a college chapel and a free art museum, and Bath for Roman remains if you will accept the longest and dearest train. Then choose the weekday before the town: Windsor Castle shuts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the Fitzwilliam does not open on Mondays.

Guide for first-time visitors to London, and we have full London day trips guide for each town below. Ticket prices and opening rules come from each venue's own site, read in October 2026. Journey times come from the train operators and Trainline's timetable pages, and rail fares come from our own guides.

In short:

  • Windsor is the shortest ride, approximately 35 minutes from Paddington with a change at Slough, but the castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In the October 2026 guard calendar, Thursday and Saturday are the days when the castle is open and the guard changes at 11:00.
  • Oxford has the most free sightseeing: the Ashmolean, the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Museum of Natural History cost nothing, so Christ Church is the one ticket to buy.
  • Cambridge is 49 minutes from King's Cross at best. King's College Chapel's early-bird price ends every Sunday night for the week ahead, and the Fitzwilliam Museum is free.
  • Bath is the longest ride, 1 hour 19 minutes at best, and the dearest day: £99.40 for the train and the Roman Baths on our figures, against £58.65 for Oxford.
  • Book the timed ticket before the train. Christ Church releases a week of tickets each Friday at about 10:00, and Roman Baths tickets cost £2 less in advance.
  • Brighton, 57 minutes at best, is the easy extra. Stonehenge has no station, so it means a train to Salisbury plus a bus, or a coach tour.

Which Day Trip From London Should You Take?

Match the town to what you want to see. Windsor suits a short ride and one big castle, Oxford suits museums and colleges, Cambridge suits a chapel and a river, and Bath suits Roman history. Brighton gives you the sea and Stonehenge gives you prehistory, but both are less simple by train than the first four.

How Long Do the Trains Take, and Which Ticket Should You Buy?

The fastest trains take 49 minutes to Cambridge, 52 to Oxford and 1 hour 19 minutes to Bath. Windsor takes approximately 35 minutes from Paddington with a change at Slough, or approximately 55 minutes direct from Waterloo. Buy an Off-Peak Day Return for Oxford and Cambridge; for Bath, a Super Off-Peak return saves the most.

Great Western Railway says up to 168 trains a day run from Paddington to Oxford, almost every 15 minutes on weekdays, and around 72 trains run on an average weekday to Bath, generally every 30 minutes. On a weekday, a missed train costs you about 15 minutes to Oxford and about 30 to Bath. Trainline lists 49 minutes as the fastest King's Cross to Cambridge time.

Our guides price the weekday Off-Peak Day Return at £37.70 for Oxford and £33.30 for Cambridge. Bath is the outlier. A Super Off-Peak return costs £75.90 and works on weekday trains leaving from about 10:00 and on any train at weekends, while the Off-Peak return that works from about 09:00 costs £104.70. Leaving Paddington an hour later saves £28.80. Fares change every year and by ticket type, so price your exact journey on National Rail before you buy.

Is Windsor Worth a Day Trip From London?

Yes, if your weekday fits. Windsor Castle is open Monday and Thursday to Sunday and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Adult admission is £32 booked ahead or £36 on the day in 2026. Thursday and Saturday add a full Changing of the Guard at 11:00 in the October 2026 calendar, and the castle is a short walk from either station.

Two stations serve the town. From Paddington, Great Western Railway reaches Windsor and Eton Central in approximately 35 minutes, with a change at Slough onto a six-minute branch train, according to Visit Windsor's travel page. From Waterloo, South Western Railway runs direct to Windsor and Eton Riverside in approximately 55 minutes. Both stations are within a few minutes' walk of the castle.

The hours change on 1 November. From then until the end of February the castle opens at 10:00 and closes at 16:15, with last admission at 15:00. From March to October it closes at 17:15, with last admission at 16:00, according to Visit Windsor's castle page. The £32 and £36 prices come from Royal Collection Trust, which lists them for 2026. As a working palace, the castle can close on other days at short notice, so check before you travel.

The guard needs its own check. The Household Division's October 2026 calendar lists Windsor guard changes at 11:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and Captain's Inspections without music on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It shows nothing for Sunday. Tuesday is the trap: the guard changes, but the castle is shut. The calendar is published month by month, so look up the month you travel.

For the town beyond the castle and the choice between the two stations, see our Windsor day trip guide covering castle tickets, train times and the guard change.

Is Oxford Worth a Day Trip From London?

Yes, if you like museums. The Ashmolean, the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Museum of Natural History are all free, so Christ Church is the only entry you must pay for. Its adult admission from 4 October to 12 December 2026 is £22.95 on weekdays and £24.95 at weekends, with £2 off when you book ahead.

Oxford University's museum pages give the hours. The Ashmolean and the Museum of Natural History open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. The Pitt Rivers opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and on Mondays from 12:00. The Ashmolean charges only for its special exhibitions.

Christ Church sells timed tickets online, and its booking rules are strict. Next week's tickets go on sale each Friday at about 10:00. Tickets are non-refundable, although an account holder can reschedule free of charge up to two hours before the visit, while anyone without an account pays £2 per ticket to change the slot. Prices rise by £2 for the Christmas vacation: from 13 to 31 December 2026 an adult pays £24.95 on weekdays and £26.95 at weekends.

Two lines reach the city. Great Western Railway runs from Paddington in 52 minutes at best, and Chiltern Railways runs from Marylebone. Our guide prices the weekday Off-Peak Day Return at £37.70 on both. Our guide to the Oxford colleges you can enter and the train that beats the coach sets out which college to book and how to time the day around it.

Is Cambridge Worth a Day Trip From London?

Yes, for King's College Chapel and the river. Trains from King's Cross take 49 minutes at best. King's sold adult chapel tickets at £16 to £18 in summer 2026, depending on the slot, and its early-bird price ends every Sunday night for the week ahead, so book before the weekend. The Fitzwilliam Museum is free.

King's ticketing page sells timed slots by the week, and the tickets are non-refundable. Students and children aged 5 to 17 paid £13.50 to £15.00 in the same weeks. The price depends on the slot you pick, so compare two or three times before you buy.

The Fitzwilliam's visit page lists opening Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays and bank holidays from 12:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:40. Its collections are free. It has no Monday opening, which makes Monday the weakest weekday for Cambridge.

Trains leave from King's Cross, and our guide prices the weekday Off-Peak Day Return on Great Northern at £33.30. For the colleges that admit visitors, the punting options and the fast train, see our Cambridge guide to King's, punting and the fast train.

Is Bath Worth the Longer Train From London?

Yes, if Roman history is the point. The fastest Great Western train from Paddington takes 1 hour 19 minutes, the longest of the four. Roman Baths adult tickets are £23.50 on weekdays and £26.50 at weekends from 1 November to 18 December 2026, booked in advance. Buying on the day costs £2 more.

The Roman Baths' November price page lists a senior or student ticket at £22.50 on weekdays and £25.50 at weekends, a child (6 to 18) at £16.50 and £19.50, and a family of two adults and two to four children at £59 and £69. Shared guided tours start from the Great Bath every hour between 10:00 and 15:00 and cost £8 per person on top of admission.

The Baths' visit page has three rules that catch day trippers out. Allow up to 15 minutes to get in from your booked slot. Only backpacks up to 30 litres are permitted, and large rucksacks and wheeled cases are not. There is no luggage storage on site, and the page names the Bath Luggage Storage Centre as the nearest option. The Baths open every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Great Western says a typical journey takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. For the Roman Baths slots, a walking route and the cases where a tour beats the train, see our Bath day trip guide to the Roman Baths, the train and what fits in a day.

What About Brighton and Stonehenge?

Brighton is the easy extra, because the fastest trains take as little as 57 minutes. Stonehenge is the awkward one, because no train stops there: you take a train to Salisbury and a bus, or join a coach tour. English Heritage tickets are valid all day, and booking online until midnight the day before saves up to 15 percent.

On Brighton, Trainline's timetable shows Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink trains, with the fastest at 57 minutes. The Royal Pavilion opens from 10:00 to 17:15 between October and March, with last admission at 16:30, according to Brighton and Hove Museums. Our Brighton day trip guide to the hour-long train to the sea covers the seafront, the Lanes and the last train home.

On Stonehenge, English Heritage charges full price for tickets bought on the day, and members enter free. The monument is the only reason to go, so the question is how you reach it. Our Stonehenge day trip guide comparing tours, driving and the train plus bus costs each option and shows what it leaves time for.

Which Day Trip Costs the Least?

Cambridge, by a short way. A weekday Off-Peak Day Return and a King's Chapel ticket come to between £49.30 and £51.30, against £58.65 for Oxford with Christ Church booked ahead and £99.40 for Bath. Windsor starts from a £32 castle ticket, and we leave its train fare out because its two routes price differently.

The totals leave out food, local transport and extras such as a guided tour or a punt. They also mix price periods, which is why each ticket carries its dates. Bath costs £40.75 more than Oxford, and most of that gap is the train.

Which Weekday Should You Pick?

Choose Thursday or Saturday if Windsor is on the list, and avoid Mondays for Cambridge. Windsor Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Fitzwilliam does not open on Mondays, and the Pitt Rivers opens at 12:00 on Mondays. The Roman Baths open every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

DayWhat changes
MondayWindsor Castle is open, but the 11:00 guard is an inspection without music. The Fitzwilliam is not open, and the Pitt Rivers opens at 12:00
TuesdayWindsor Castle is closed, although the guard changes at 11:00 in the October calendar
WednesdayWindsor Castle is closed
ThursdayWindsor Castle is open and the guard changes at 11:00
FridayWindsor Castle is open, and the guard is an inspection without music
SaturdayWindsor Castle is open and the guard changes at 11:00
SundayThe Fitzwilliam opens at 12:00. Windsor Castle is open, with no guard ceremony in the October calendar

What Catches Day Trippers Out?

Four things: timed tickets, conditions on cheap train fares, short winter hours and luggage rules. Windsor's last admission is 15:00 from 1 November, the Roman Baths take no large bags, and the cheapest rail tickets are tied to one train or a later departure. Check each before you pay for anything.

  • Timed tickets come first. Christ Church, King's College Chapel and the Roman Baths all sell timed slots, and the first two are non-refundable.
  • Cheap rail tickets carry conditions. Advance tickets are for one specific train, and our guides give 09:20 on weekdays for the GWR Off-Peak return to Oxford, 09:30 for the Great Northern return to Cambridge and about 10:00 for the Bath Super Off-Peak return.
  • Winter shortens the day. From 1 November Windsor Castle closes at 16:15, so a late start loses the visit.
  • Luggage is awkward at the Roman Baths, which have no storage and refuse large bags. Leave bags at a station or your hotel.
  • Engineering works replace trains with buses on some weekends, so check National Rail for the date you travel.

Where Do Day Trips Fit in a Longer London Stay?

Between city days, not stacked together. A day trip means an early start, a booked ticket and hours on your feet, so it works best with a lighter city day on either side. Our five-day London itinerary with two day trips built in does this: Oxford on day two, Bath on day four, London on the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for a day trip from London, Oxford or Cambridge?

Oxford if you want free museums and a choice of colleges, Cambridge if you want a shorter, cheaper day centred on King's College Chapel. The fastest train takes 52 minutes to Oxford and 49 to Cambridge. On our rail and ticket figures, Cambridge costs £7.35 to £9.35 less once you add Christ Church or King's.

Is Windsor Castle open every day?

No. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and open Monday and Thursday to Sunday. From 1 November it closes at 16:15, with last admission at 15:00. Adult tickets are £32 booked ahead or £36 on the day, and as a working palace the castle can close at short notice, so check before you travel.

Is Bath worth a day trip from London?

Yes, for the Roman Baths, but it is the longest and dearest of the four. The fastest Great Western train takes 1 hour 19 minutes, our guide prices a Super Off-Peak return at £75.90, and weekday Roman Baths tickets are £23.50 from 1 November to 18 December 2026. Leave Paddington after about 10:00 to use the cheaper return.

Can you visit two day trip towns in one day?

Only on a coach tour, which pairs towns such as Windsor and Stonehenge into one long day with short stops at each. By train, each town needs a full day: the fastest return trip to Bath alone takes 2 hours 38 minutes, before you have seen anything, and a missed connection adds to it.

Do you need to book tickets in advance for day trips from London?

For the paid venues, yes. Christ Church releases next week's tickets on Fridays at about 10:00, King's College Chapel's early-bird price ends each Sunday night, and Roman Baths advance tickets cost £2 less than on the day. Windsor Castle costs £32 booked ahead and £36 on the day.
